Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
