French authorities to begin stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
