Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Public Attention

This event follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
