Crew Member Shares Depression Following Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
